With tourism's winter high season only months away, Southwest Florida International Airport has rolled out a number of expensive changes to cater to the travel customer, while simultaneously boosting revenue opportunities for the airport. Even though the terminal is only 9 years old, the airport is recognizing the advantages of modern technology and is creating a more high-tech atmosphere which will resonate with the present day traveler seeking conveniences.
Airport Plaza, comprised of a gas station with 20 fueling pumps, a car wash and a convenience store is operating on airport property. The new cell phone lot is complete with better lighting and 75 parking spaces, more than twice as many as the previously packed lot. These accommodations are notable for travelers returning rental cars, those picking up loved ones, taxi drivers and employees, and is not typical for most travel destinations in the country. The convenience store will have flight information screens inside so those waiting to pick someone up can monitor flight arrival times. There are booths inside, a cell phone charging station, restrooms and snacks. There are also plans to add a restaurant in the next year.
Inside the terminal:
- New big-screen, high-definition video walls with advertising will replace the scrolling signs in the public areas and concourses.
- New flight information display screens are bigger and carry more listings. They are mounted to metal frames for a cleaner look, no longer in bulky cabinets.
- Device-charging stations for cell phones, e-readers and tablets will replace many of the pay phone stations.
