Research by National Association of Realtors (NAR) shows that 60% of Americans prefer a neighborhood with a mix of houses, stores and other businesses within walking distance, rather than neighborhoods that require more driving.
Of the 1500 adult Americans surveyed, 52% preferred a single family house with a large yard, while 78% said that the neighborhood was more important than the size of the house. 57% would choose shorter commute over a large yard, and 55% would choose walking distance to schools, stores and restaurants over a large yard.
According to NAR's preference survey for what most Americans consider an ideal community, the most popular choice was a suburban setting with a mix of houses, shops and businesses. The least popular community was a suburban neighborhood with just houses.
