Naples Cup Regatta November 8th-9th 2014

10/1/14

The Naples Community Sailing Center (NCSC) has hosted the Naples Cup Regatta for over 13 years. It has quickly become one of the premier regattas in Florida attracting 300-400 sailors and their families each year. It is held at Lowdermilk Park in downtown Naples, an idyllic location to sit on the white sand beach and watch the sailors compete on the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Sailors travel from all over the country to compete in this 2-day event. The Naples Cup offers racing for several classes of the boat including opti, Laser, and 420 (two-person boat).

The Optimist or "Opti" is a small, single-handed sailing dinghy intended for sailors between the ages of 8-15 years. The boats are the single sail and made primarily of fiberglass. The single sail of the Opti is sprit-rigged. Just in front of the bulkhead, which partitions the boat nearly in half, is the daggerboard case. In the rear of the boat is a one-handed rudder. Invented in Tampa, Florida it has quickly become one of the most popular sailing dinghies in the world boasting over 150,000 officially registered boats and is recognized as an International Class by the International Sailing Federation. It was the primary introductory boat for nearly 80% of the skippers in the London Olympics.

NCSC is a community-based, not-for-profit organization that has been educating local children in the sport of sailing since 1991. Based at the Naples Landings in Old Naples the sailing team can be seen throughout the week practicing in Naples Bay. The mission of the NCSC is to organize, promote and develop a family and community-based program of safe recreational and competitive sailing for the moral and physical development and enjoyment of area youth and adults. It is the goal of NCSC to instill self-confidence, encourage responsibility, and promote the development of integrity and sportsmanship.

My son, Asher, has been sailing with the Naples Sailing Center for the past two years and I take pride in the fact that at such a young age he is learning not only the skills of sailing but life skills of self-confidence and responsibility. It is a wonderful program with endless benefits.
