Nestled amongst the single-family homes between Wedge Drive and Harbour Drive sits a half century old golf course and clubhouse called Moorings Country Club. Consisting of 18 holes of par 3 and par 4 golf, an old Florida style clubhouse, and 350 members the club has been struggling financially. Recently a letter went out to club members proposing a complete overhaul to the course, club, and membership. Several plans were presented to the members who will vote on which direction they want to go. It has been a trend throughout Naples to take advantage of the current real estate climate and renovate in order to enhance real estate values, membership, and aesthetics. Grey Oaks will undergo huge renovations this summer as will Bear's Paw (Arnold Palmer will redesign his original course).
One proposal for the Moorings Country Club is to develop 43 acres of the 18 hole course, reducing the size by 40%. This will allow 32 lots to be carved out and sold providing much needed capital for a club that has said they owe $3.88 million in refunds to members wishing to get out. This would allow for a new 2 story 21,000 square foot clubhouse designed by Matt Kragh to be built. The Club will be a more prominent structure in the neighborhood and will feature a beautiful dining room overlooking the course, a roof top terrace, and fitness center. The Club will also add 2 tennis courts and decrease membership by 18%.
These improvements should be very attractive to property owners living in the area around the golf course and has been met with resistance from homeowners who bought on the golf course for the view facing the prospect that they may be obstructed by the future development.
