The Atlanta Braves are scouting Collier County in search of a new spring training home that county commissioners say could be located off Collier Boulevard near Interstate 75.
But it’s unclear how realistic the proposal is, as several Collier commissioners have raised concerns about the proposed location and cost, and Sarasota and Palm Beach officials appear to have made more progress with competing proposals. Terry McGuirk, the Braves’ chairman and CEO, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution last week that the team is focused on Sarasota and Palm Beach now “just because there are certain timetables of construction where we have to have shovels in the ground to be playing in 2018.” That formal proposal is coming quickly, with the Braves expected to make a decision soon on a new spring training location. Representatives from the Braves could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
